Colerne Village Website

**Sorry For The Double Post Registered Members - Wanted To Make Sure Guests Could See This As Well Though**

Hi,

I am currently developing a Colerne community website, with facilities such as a online calendar for events, latest village news, advertisements from local buisnesses.

I am planning for the service to be supported by the adverts, which I am planning to cost around £5-10 per 1-2 months, and donations.

The service will be running on a TLD (Top level domain) such as colernevillage.co.uk if people are willing to donate and spend a little money on advertising on the site.

The advertisments will be running on a scrolling slideshow to the right or left hand site of the site, but this may change, and I expect to have a page dedicated to the advertising buisnesses, with contact numbers and such.

If no-one (:O) shows interest in donating or spending a little money on advertising, the service will run on a subdomain of my current website (hashdevelopment.com.)

Any support or suggestions welcome!

Btm.

Talking of Colerne Village. Same old story yesterday, bit of snow and everyone loves each other for the day. Oooh, oooh, Hangar Hill...

Not being rude, just making a point, why make another 'Colerne' website up when we've already got one and we don't need to pay for it?

Unfortunately, as you can see this networked forum is mainly inactive, and does not host features such as online calendars, events and news.

You as a person do not have to pay for it, but advertisments from local buisnesses will be charged for, to support hosting and maintenance fees. Donations go to the same cause.

Hi (and happy new year),

There's a very good reason why we don't allow commercial advertising on this site - and that's so as not to compete with the Parish Magazine (who rely on advertisements to fund its distribution). This agreement was made with the Parish Magazine when this site was first launched. The Parish Magazine has a far wider distribution than this site (there are still plenty of local residents who don't have access to the Internet). We should do all we can to support the survival of the Parish Magazine.

This site does have an events calendar (see Calendar in top bar - if you register an event, it will automatically appear on the home page). And news is typically handled via posts in the relevant News forums. It's up to the members of the site to make the site work.

Content is the biggest issue for any community site - so rather than put effort into creating a duplicate site - you could become an active contributor or moderator here. Just drop me a PM if you are still interested.

Seems pointless to me.
Nothing is more irritating than unwanted, scrolling adverts! (it is so easy to go directly to what you want).
What advertiser, except as a charitable act, is going to advertise to an inherently limited audience?
What attracts 'users/viewers' is, conflict, humour, common sense, relevant and current topics and issues, and local information (probably in that order!).
The present site has the potential to provide all of these, it just needs people to keep it 'rolling', and (just like the soaps) people will come back to see the latest 'episode' or 'smart arse' comment.
It is highly likely you would be wasting your time.
