2010 Broadband and Mobile Update

Postby Macchu » Wed Feb 03, 2010 10:17 pm

I hope to be moving to Colerne soon (providing the sale goes through OK) and really applaud the idea of a community network like ColerneNet. It is a great idea and I hope you do not mind me asking a couple of questions through its pages.

I note on this network that broadband has been an issue in the past, but that it seems to have died down as an issue. This, presumably, is because broadband is available and works. My question is what do people think is the best performer/deal. Personal experience beats BT's adverts anytime.

Similarly with mobiles. T-Mobile seems to give good 3G coverage in Colerne while Vodafone and Orange give only 2½G. What are the experiences of the villagers?

Thanks in advance

Broadband is still an issue for Northwood/Pinewood/Thickwood. It seems to be patchy for some. Useable for others. Not too bad in the centre of the village (but you'll struggle to get much more than 2-3 Mbits/s download speeds.

I'm on O2 3G and, as you say, isn't brilliant indoors. An external antenna might help.

Hi,

Our AOL broadband has a 300/500kb Download speed in IE and firefox, and Vodafone MiFi works fine here (opposite the school) I use my 3 mobile with 4 bars around the centre of the village, not sure about others.

Ben.

I live up just by the base and I get 500kb download speed with BT Internet. Not brilliant and can't stream most programs on BBC iplayer but still reasonably quick for most things, usually takes just over a minute to download music tracks.
I have had O2 and Orange phones in the past and had poor coverage in the village and by the house but Vodaphone has given very good coverage.

This is all great stuff, thank you. We will be living by the Doctor's surgery at, what I have already started to call, the Fox & Hounds end of the village!

I find streaming iPlayer is fine, especially on devices such as the Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 3.
