Family history

Postby Dale Daniel » Thu Apr 09, 2009 12:16 pm

One of my ancestors lived in the village Jane Phillips by the 1891 census she lived with her husband William the then headmaster in The School House.
By the 1901 census she is still a school teacher in the village living with her daughter Agnes at Master Croft.....does anyone in your local history society what became of her or her daughter?
Cheers
Dale

Jane Phillips - Family History

Postby BrendaP » Thu Apr 09, 2009 10:21 pm

Jane Phillips aged 79 died June-Sept 1981 in Chippenham sub-district which I believe includes Colerne. see:
http://www.wiltshirebmd.org.uk/cgi/deathind.cgi?county=wiltshire
and
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

I don't know if the churchyard is still open for burials, but according to
http://www.springgrovegrammarschool.org.uk/page0061.htm
there's a WW2 war grave in the churchyard, so yes, your Jane Phillips could have been buried there in 1918.

Jane Phillips

Postby Dale Daniel » Fri Apr 10, 2009 1:04 pm

Jane was born in 1845 so if she died in 1918 her age would of been 73 and not 79.
Thanks all the same Brenda for your input.

That doesn't necessarily mean anything.
It was quite common in those days for births not to be registered.

Ages on death certificates are not always accurate - depended on who registered the death and how well they knew the deceased!

The way to find if she was buried in Colerne Churchyard is to look at the burial register for Colerne which is held at Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre in Chippenham

I've poked around on Ancestry, am I right in thinking that your Jane was born Jane Bargwenson in Llandovery?
